Beeldleer scope note

Perspective as expression in art refers to the way an individual artist uses her/his unique viewpoint, shaped by the experiences and values, to communicate the understanding of a situation. For instance, Vincent Van Gogh uses to distortions of perspective to express internal emotions, the forerunner of surrealism Giogio De Chirico studied theories of perspective to create methaphysical spaces (see: Spagnaletto 2016) while the the English surrealist Paul Nash explored different forms of perspective techniques to express the mystical in landscapes and the horrors of war. Others use distortions of perpective to represent hallucinations such as F.S. Hess or apparitions in dreams like Salvador Dali (see Soliterman 2023).
